It’s Saturday night and my 11year old step son has recently discovered a love of cooking. I’m encouraging this new found love of this tech-free activity and spending lots of time cooking and experimenting in the kitchen. We’ve made lots of fun things so far. Tonight we experimented making a gluten free, nutrient rich pizza from scratch. This was so much fun and the end result tasted amazing. I’d strongly recommend getting the little ones in the kitchen for some creative fun.
As it starts cooling down in Australia, it’s very common that a lot of people’s mood starts to change. When the sun is shining it’s easy to feel happy and resilient, but then we hit Autumn and start seeing rain and clouds and suddenly people commonly report feeling down and depressed. This phenomenon is aptly named SAD (Seasonal Affect Disorder) where people report symptoms of depression, mood disorders, hopelessness, fatigue, sleep difficulties, weight gain, social withdrawa
It may come as a surprise to you that it is estimated that we are exposed to somewhere between 150 to 500 chemicals every day through our personal care products. It is estimated that there are 13,000 chemicals in cosmetics and only 10% of these chemicals have been tested for human safety. A study by the Environmental Working Group, found that blood and urine samples of teenage girls were contaminated with 64% of the analysed chemicals from four major chemical familes: phthala
A gluten free diet can be a healthy choice and for some can be a life changer. I know for me going gluten free meant opening up a new world - no more fatigue, better sleep, waking up with energy, no more giant swollen belly after eating and, the big one - no more depression. These days gluten free living is getting easier and easier thanks to it's growing popularity and fame. When I first cut out gluten it was rare to find a cafe that had any GF signs on the menu, now I often
Some of you may be surprised to hear it but, at the beginning of 2016 I was seriously burned out. Over the last year I'd created and collaborated on some pretty amazing new projects but was feeling completely worn out and exhausted as a result. As a Nutritionist I'm lucky enough to know exactly what is needed and have a lot of great tricks and tools to hand which help with this. I ate a great diet, even going vegan for a while, supplemented myself with the right herbs and nut
I love baking, and love experimenting with new ingredients and recipes. I often research what's out there before working on my own version, substituting ingredients for more nourishing, healthier ingredients where possible. Something I find a little annoying at times however is having to sift through pages of information about the benefits of raw cacao/coconut oil etc before getting to the recipe. So today, here's a delicious recipe with no blurb, no marketing, no story - jus
Hi folks and Happy New Year! Welcome back from your well deserved breaks. I hope your year has begun with smiles and fierce determination to make this year even greater than the last. SCN is now back in action after a fabulous Christmas break. January is a wonderful time in our clinic. Many people get tempted to shy away from their Nutritionist in January for fear of being scolded or disappointed - they've got it all wrong. At SCN we ensure our patients see January as a chanc
With a library of fresh and easy 10 minute meals, you're equipped for even the longest of days. Here's my all-time favourite: Zucchini Pasta with Fresh Basil & Tomato Sauce Ingredients: 1 zucchini peeled or spiraled into "pasta" sheets 1/2 a cup of organic button mushrooms 1 punnet of fresh cherry tomatoes 1 handful of fresh basil leaves 1/2 a cup of crushed tomatoes (from a jar or bottle rather than can if possible) 1 clove Aussie garlic 1 tsp of chili Directions: Add all in
With Christmas just around the corner it's time to stockpile your favourite healthy treats. Loading up on delicious, but healthy, treats helps you to enjoy the festivities and feasting without feeling bloated, tired or compromising your weight loss goals. Here's one of my favourite recipes. These protein balls are fun, and quite messy, to make so are a great recipe to get your kids involved with making. Ingredients: 1-2 scoops of your favourite protein powder (I used Raw prot
We would all like to float through our days in a sea of calm, but sometimes life just gets in the way. Simple annoyances, frustrations and tensions can become overwhelming and can lead to feeling overwhelmed, angry and unable to cope. The benefits of meditation are really starting to become known in the past few years. Previously reserved for the hippie type, yoga-going happy people and buddhists, meditation is now becoming a recognised form of healing within it's own right.
Calling all chocoholics!! Ever dreamed of eating chocolate pudding for breakfast? Now you can while still boosting energy, vitality and even losing weight! Keeping your blood sugar stable is a very important factor during a weight loss program as we all know. However blood sugar balance is also vital for maintaining general health also. We have become slaves to sugar which unfortunately increases inflammation, drives anxiety and weight gain and can create an imbalance in your
I have never really considered myself a morning person. Before discovering Nutritional Medicine I woke up feeling so ridiculously tired EVERY morning that I would give absolutely anything for an extra hour in bed. These days, thanks to finding my Nutritional balance, I wake up often before my alarm, find it difficult to sleep in past 7am and actually look forward to going to bed early and waking up feeling refreshed. This year I even found myself glad when daylight savings ca
We all love Chia pudding, choc-chia pudding was my all time favourite... Until, following a very happy accident, I discovered SCN choc-chia-fudge! This recipe is so simple, so versitile and so indulgent I feel like I should actually trademark it before releasing it out in to the world. It's really so amazing that EVERYONE must know that I came up with it!.. I must get credit! But then the Buddhist-centred, nurturing, health care practitioner part of my brain takes over and I
Every day when I wake up I take 5minutes to reflect on the positive things in my life which make every day more special than the last. There is my beautiful family who would love me no matter what or who I was, my wonderful – selfless – loyal – caring and generous friends who are always there to support me through thick and thin, my divine angelic cat (I’m not kidding she’s beautiful – look at her), Then of course there is my job, my life, my passion – being a Nutritionist. I
On this beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon many of us are now preparing for the week ahead. Meals and ingredients to be chosen, grocery shopping to be done, planning ahead for another week of delicious healthy eating. In my quest to stay healthy I’ve often grumbled about the fact that lunch options are usually healthy or tasty - few places offer both but why? WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND A DECENT SERVE OF PROTEIN WITH A TASTY SIDE OF VEGETABLES FOR UNDER $20 IN SYDNEY? But wait...
I'm a big snacker and just love all things spicy and crunchy. As a Nutritionist I'm also a big fan of the magical healing properties of leafy green veggies (obviously). As I'm a big foodie and a lover of all things snacky, my diet plans are filled delicious snack options. I love to provide an exciting change from the traditional plain veggie sticks and include nut butters, choc avo mousse, fruit, berries, coconut treats - I really believe it's important to have a variety of
